Canada Pro Deposit 2024 Payment Dates

Every so often, you may see some deposits in your bank account that say Canada Pro Deposit. It can be confusing where those payments come from, but what those payments can be depends on which province you live in. This is because Canada Pro Depsit payments are provincial government program benefits that the federal government pays out to provide financial assistance for eligible Canadians.

There are a few different payments that fall under the Canada Pro Deposit. Let’s take a look at what these benefits are as well as when you should expect to receive them.

    2024 Payment Dates

The benefit payment dates for the 2024 Canada Pro Deposit payments are similar to those from 2023 but vary slightly due to statutory holidays and weekends. Let's take a look at when you should expect to receive these payments through direct deposit in 2024. However, you may only receive a lump sum payment in July instead of a monthly payment on the Canada Pro payment dates if your total annual credit is $360 or less.

    • January 10
    • February 9
    • March 8
    • April 10
    • May 10
    • June 10
    • July 10
    • August 9
    • September 10
    • October 10
    • November 8
    • December 10

These payment dates are only for the Canada Pro Deposit benefits that are given out on a monthly basis, which are the Ontario Trillium Benefit payments. Alberta Child and Family Benefit payments don’t have specific dates like the Canada Pro deposit dates but are given out on a quarterly basis. The months that you should expect to receive these payments are:

    • August
    • November
    • February
    • May

If you find yourself receiving payments less often than 4 times per benefit year, it could be because you’re only eligible for amounts below $10.

Benefits Included With the Canada Pro Deposit

As we mentioned, Canada Pro Deposit payments included deposits from two different provincial programs. These Canada Pro Deposit programs are the Ontario Trillium Benefit programs and the Alberta Child and Family Benefit program. However, it’s important to note that the OTB is made up of three different benefits, and if you receive the OTB, you only have to be eligible for one of these.

    Ontario Trillium Benefit

The Ontario Trillium Benefit is available to Canadians who live in Ontario and meet the eligibility requirements. It’s made up of three different credits to help those who qualify pay for energy costs, sales tax, and property taxes. In order to start receiving these benefits, you only need to be eligible to receive one of these benefits.

    Northern Ontario Energy Credit

The Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC) offers tax-free payments to those who live in Northern Ontario, which is meant to help with higher energy costs. In order to be eligible for this credit, you must have been a resident of Northern Ontario as of December 31, 2023. You also have to meet at least one of the three following criteria:

    • Be at least 18 years old
    • Have (or had) a spouse or common-law partner
    • Be a parent who lives (or lived) with your child

You must also have paid rent or property taxes for your main residence in 2023. You could also have lived on a reserve and paid for your home energy costs or lived in a long-term public care home as long as you paid for part of the accommodation costs.

One of the most important qualifications for this credit is that you must be a Northern Ontario resident. The towns that are included in this credit are:

    • Algoma
    • Cochrane
    • Kenora
    • Manitoulin
    • Nipissing
    • Parry Sound
    • Rainy River
    • Sudbury
    • Thunder Bay
    • Timiskaming

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit

Another credit you could qualify for from the Ontario government that is part of the OTB is the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit. It’s one of the three tax-free benefits available, but in order to start receiving it, you do need to be an Ontario resident as of December 31, 2023, as well as meet one of the following conditions:

    • Be 18 years old or older
    • Be a parent who lives (or lived) with your child
    • Be married or in a common-law relationship (or previously)

These aren’t the only requirements, though. Since the credit is meant to cover some of the cost of property taxes or energy costs, you do need to meet one of the four other requirements as well.

    1. You must have paid property taxes on your main residence.
    2. You rented, and your landlord has to pay property taxes on your principal residence.
    3. You lived on a reserve and paid your energy costs.
    4. You lived in a long-term public care home and paid part of the costs.

While it is stated in the name, this credit has two different components: the property tax component and the energy cost component. You can apply if you’re eligible for either.

    Ontario Sales Tax Credit

Another tax-free amount that you can receive if you live in Ontario is the Ontario Sales Tax Credit. This credit is intended to offset some of the sales taxes that Ontarians pay on an annual basis. In order to receive this credit, you only need to meet a few different requirements. The first is that you need to be an Ontario resident at some time before June 1, 2025. You must also meet one of the three following conditions:

    • Be 19 years old or older
    • Be a parent who lives (or lived) with your child
    • Be married or in a common-law relationship (or previously)

    Alberta Child and Family Benefits

The Alberta Child and Family Benefit is a benefit given to low to moderate-income families that have children under the age of 18. It’s also non-taxable, so the amounts you receive are not considered as part of your taxable income.

Only some families in Alberta are approved for this benefit. In order to start receiving it, you do need to meet the eligibility requirements. These include:

    • Being an Alberta resident
    • Filing an income tax return
    • Meeting the adjusted net income criteria
    • Being a parent of one or more children under 18

How to Apply for Canada Pro Deposit Payments

How you can start receiving Canada Pro benefit payments is based on which of the four benefits that you could qualify for. If you’re looking to receive any of the Ontario Trillium Benefits, then you do need to apply. All you need to do is file your annual income tax and benefit return along with the ON-BEN application form. The Canada Revenue Agency will then assess your return to verify whether or not you qualify.

As for the Alberta Child and Family Benefit, you don’t need to apply to qualify. All you need to do is file an annual tax return and be qualified for the Canada Child Benefit. Your tax return will automatically be assessed, and if you’re approved, you’ll receive your benefit payments automatically.

    Canada Pro Deposit Payment Amounts

The Canada Pro payments that you receive depend on which benefit you qualify for.

    Ontario Trillium Benefit

The amount you qualify for with the OTB is based on which benefit you qualify for.

    OTB BenefitMaximum Payment
Northern Ontario Energy Credit$180 for singles$277 for singles
Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit$1,248 between the ages of 18 and 64$1,421 for those 65 or older$277 if you live on a reserve or in a public care home$25 for when you lived in a designated Ontario University, College, or private school residence
Ontario Sales Tax CreditUp to $360Up to $360 for your spouse or common-law partner and each child under 19

For the Alberta Child and Family Benefit, the maximum amount you receive is based on how many children you have and whether or not you’ll receive the working component.

Number of ChildrenMaximum Base ComponentMaximum Working Component
    1$1,410$722
    2$2,115$1,379
    3$2,820$1,722
    4 or more$3,525$1,902

The amount you receive for the working component is based on your employment income as well as your taxable income and is there to encourage those working to continue working. The base component is based on your annual taxable income.

    Canada Pro Deposit Amount Increases

In most cases, the amounts you can receive from the Canada Pro Deposit are assessed annually. Exactly how much and when is based on the benefit since each province and benefit will do this differently.

With the Ontario Trillium Benefit, the amounts you receive are assessed on an annual basis and based on your annual tax return. That said, the maximum annual credit amounts that you can receive are also assessed on an annual basis based on the cost of living and inflation.

For the Alberta Child and Family Benefit, the maximum amount was recently increased for 2023 and started getting delivered to families who qualify in February of 2023. This amount is reassessed every benefit year. The increase from 2023 is seen to hold for the 2024 benefit year. The amount you receive is also assessed annually based on your annual tax return.

    Overview

Whether or not you receive the Canada Pro Deposit into your account as quarterly or monthly payment is based on where you live and which credits you qualify for. All of the OTB credits are paid out monthly, whereas the ACFB is paid out quarterly. How much you receive from either of these is based on whether or not you meet the eligibility requirements, and in some cases, these requirements include your annual adjusted family net income.

If you think you qualify for either of these benefits, it’s best to apply. That said, in most cases, you will start receiving the ACFB automatically. If you aren’t receiving them but think you should be, verify that you’re registered for the Canada Child Benefit. If you aren’t, you can apply for this, and once approved, you’ll be considered for the ACFB.
