This is specifically focusing on payments between the amounts of $500 and $1,500. This started on March 3, 2026.
Benefits Included in the Accelerated Benefit Program
Service Canada is looking to accelerate payments for all of their programs where amounts are between $500 and $1,500. This is a lot of programs, but here are the main ones that will affect Canadians the most.
| Program | Details |
| Employment Insurance | This program provides temporary benefits for those who are unable to work due to no fault of their own. |
| Old Age Security | This is just one of the pensions offered to retired working Canadians. |
| Guaranteed Income Supplement | This is a supplement for low-income seniors in Canada. |
| CPP Pension | These are retirement benefits given to those who qualify. |
| CPP Disability | These are payments given to Canadians who are unable to work due to a long-term disability. |
| Child Disability Benefit | This tax-free monthly payment is given to parents with a child with disabilities. |
Other benefits that are distributed by the Canada Revenue Agency are not part of the accelerated payment program. These CRA benefit payments include:
- GST/HST credit (Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit)
- Canada Disability Benefit
- Ontario Trillium Benefits (Northern Ontario Energy Credit, Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit)
- Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit
- Canada Child Benefit
What does the Government Mean when they say Faster?
When the government says the payments are going to be faster, they are referring to digital service upgrades that allow for direct deposit of some government benefit payments to be paid faster. In order to receive faster service for Canadian payments, you will need to provide your banking information.
Does This Apply to All Service Canada Programs?
In short, yes, the increase to the payment schedule for federal benefits to eligible Canadians in their bank accounts applies to all Service Canada Programs. As of March 2026, recipients are anticipated to receive income support payments on their scheduled payment date or faster.
Provincial benefits are included in this, but certain federal benefits, including Old Age Security and other retirement pensions, child benefits, and CPP benefits, such as survivor benefits. Depending on the eligibility criteria that you meet, you may qualify for both monthly installments as well as benefits that are paid quarterly.
The idea behind this is for Canadian families to avoid payment delays and gain timely access to the benefits and payment amounts that they qualify for. To clarify, though, the faster payments are only eligible for payment amounts between $500 and $1,500.
How to Qualify for Accelerated Processing
In order to qualify for accelerated payments, you generally need to qualify for eligible programs. Depending on the program, this could mean:
- Filing your most recent tax return for the benefit year (to get your current taxable income)
- Meeting the income thresholds
- Providing accurate banking details (payment details)
- Meeting the appropriate family status (such as raising children)
- Being Canadian residents
Essentially, your personal circumstances just have to meet the criteria. It mostly affects the programs that don’t have payment dates. Payment details for those with a scheduled date will likely be the same. First payments for things like OAS payments and EI payments will be affected the most since this process aims for fewer business days to process paperwork and avoid delays to additional supports that many Canadians rely on.
Back-End System Changes that are Allowing a Faster Processing Speed
The way that Service Canada is able to increase their processing time is by updating many of their current processes. First, they are modernizing their back-end system by creating state-of-the-art enterprise data centers. These data centers are able to handle higher application volumes as well as provide more user-friendly services.
With the old system, Service Canada heavily relied on paper-based processing. Now, they’re able to work with a more digital workflow, which increases their overall processing speed. They’ve even enhanced their data processing, which allows them to cross-reference client information digitally and without any manual intervention.
They’ve also changed things so they have a cloud-based processing system. This allows them to handle way more traffic during peak times and process information for high-traffic programs like Employment Insurance much faster. Their process of digital integration also allows the different government departments to share information faster and more efficiently, which can also increase their processing times.
Processing Times for CRA Benefits
When it comes to benefits that are administered by the CRA instead of Service Canada, the processing time is going to be a little longer. Currently, tax refunds that are electronically filed can take up to 2 weeks to process, and those that are filed by paper can take even longer. This is the same timeline for changes that are requested for income tax returns.
If you apply for the Disability tax credit, currently, the wait time for processing can be as long as 8 weeks. This is the same timeline for new applications for the Canada Child Benefit. When it comes to the GST/HST credit, which is now known as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, the processing time can also be 8 weeks. This means that you could receive your benefits after the scheduled date, depending on when you filed your income tax return.
Keep in mind that these are just the processing times if there are no issues. If there are missing documents, it can add another 45 days to the process. If you file a paper-based application, this can add even more time. And, if the system is receiving a high number of applications, then there can be an even longer delay.
Increase in CRA Processing Times
Even though it’s Service Canada payments between $500 and $1,500 that are seeing an increase in their processing time, the CRA is also working on increasing its processing times. In late 2025, they implemented a 100-day service improvement plan and reduced the wait time to speak to an agent by 70%.
Behind the scenes, the CRA has also been working on leveraging generative AI and other digital assets in order to help effectively manage their process and manage client interactions. They’re also trying to encourage online tax returns so that they keep their 2-week processing time. They’re also introducing the SimpleFile process that will eventually lead to automated tax filing for low-income Canadians with simple returns.
Final Thoughts
If you’re expecting funds from the federal government, it’s normal for additional delays to occur, especially when it comes to figuring out the exact amount that you qualify for. This is because your eligibility depends on whether or not you meet the criteria, and this has to be verified. With the government’s new processing systems, they can actually reduce this processing time and get you your funds even faster.
If you are applying for separate credits, some may have faster processing, and some don’t. Currently, it’s just the programs that are issued by Service Canada that are affected. Credits and benefits administered by the Canada Revenue Agency aren’t impacted by these new processing speeds at all. It’s also important to note that it’s the payment amounts of $500 to $1,500 that are being prioritized.
